The much controversial topic of distance learning, and more particularly e-learning, will be discussed during a conference organized by Assumption University, in partnership with the Computer Association of Thailand and www.Prasena.com , on October 13, 2002, from 12.30 to 14.30.
The conference will take place within the wider framework of Global Learning Day 6, a 24-hour Internet Marathon initiated by the Franklin Institute of Global Learning headquartered in Chicago.
While participants are invited to go to the Assumption University's Bangna Campus to meet with the speakers in person, the University will also provide the technical infrastructure enabling full virtual interaction with the entire world. Anybody anywhere will therefore be able to join the presentation live and interact during the Q&A sessions through an impressive set of media including life streaming video, Voice-over IP, live chat-board, POT and live audience. Onsite participants will also be able to join the Global Learning Day marathon throughout the day.
Prof. Dr. Srisakdi Charmonman, President of the Computer Association of Thailand and Chairman of the Board of the College of Internet Distance Education of Assumption University, will chair the conference and speak about distance education in Thailand. Enthusiastic, Dr. Srisakdi intends to demonstrate that "education can be delivered from anyplace to anywhere. The convergence of technology and education provides remarkable opportunities to everyone".
Rev. Bro. Dr. Prathip Martin Komolmas, President of the Assumption University, will present the pioneering initiatives of the University with regards to e-learning.
Dr. Wuttipong Pongsuwan, Secretary General of the Computer Association of Thailand, and Advisor to the Prime Minister will join the discussion panel and participate at the Q&A session.
Prasena's Think Tank Member Prof. Dr. B.K. Passi and Infostructure Director Lukas O. Ritzel , recent speaker at ABAC on eLearning as East Asia Representatives of the Global Learning Day, will then expand on the subject and make a provocative proposition - for them, distance learning is the way to go for Asia to educate its masses, an endeavor made critical by the rapid changes in the economic environment. "Our society is shifting from the Industrial Era to a new Era, where the key resources will be information and knowledge rather than assets and money", says Lukas Ritzel, adding that "education and life-long learning therefore become critical success factors for individuals as well as organizations and countries".
Reputed researcher in the areas of creativity and innovation, Dr. BK Passi stresses that "by using networked technologies to acquire education and to share knowledge, ideas and cultural values, Asians will be able to bring a much-needed contribution to the global community and therefore restore balance to the world".
Such ideas and many more will be presented and debated during the Global Learning Day's 24-hour voyage on distance and e-learning. It will start with the event's initiator John Hibbs at B. Franklin Institute of Global Learning's headquarters in Chicago, proceed towards the South Pacific, East and South Asia, then the Middle-East and Africa, Europe, Central and South America, and will come full circle in North America for its conclusion.
Music support during the presentation by the song Pru from the Bakerymusic band named 'PRU' and traditional thai music 'Ratana Kosin'
The main objective of this conference is to show that education can be 'delivered' from anyplace to anywhere and that the convergence of technology and education provide remarkable opportunities to everyone.
