Character Painting Poster
Stella Martinet a Philiphine living in Thailand, A talented member of Bangkoks painting group was of course ideal to manage the Painting station where we asked the kids to draw all together one big poster with everybody's face. She was assisted by two Thai students from KMUTT K Daeng and K Som. The kids have been asked to paint each other in the way they see the other person. Not so much the outside, but the inside of each characteristic. Have a look at some of the Picasso, Munch, Dolle, Miro and Dali they created.

"It was a delight to see these groups of children creating lovely works
of art. And it feels rewarding just knowing that you were a part of this colorful process. My gratitude to you Lukas for inviting me to share what I can for such a worthwhile undertaking. Also, many thanks to my station-mates, P. Daeng and K. Som for doing the thai translations for me. It was nice getting to know you and having chit chats withboth of you. Hope to someday share time with you again." |
"The more mature participants (teens) drawings were obviously
with more details and precision. Almost all
of them used the glitters except for one or two teens who preferred
using the black colored pens. Among the glitters used, gold was the most sought-after, followed by the colors silver, red, green, blue. For the girls, pink was often used. Styles varied, some works had touches of or similar to Japanese cartoon characters. Among the mediums used, crayons were the last preference." |

"It was fairly easy for the succeeding groups to do the task that we requested them to do because of the impressions left by our first batch. We needed just a little explanation and they did it on their own. Some were so spontaneous that the paintings were done in about 3 minutes. Others really took their time and we even have to stop some of them otherwise, they would go on and on and there wouldnt be space left for the next groups." |

In her own words: The first bunch of children that came to us were originally reluctant to paint the faces of their friends on the wide white paper we provided, with reasons such as they do not know how to paint and that its difficult to do it. But after showing them a very simple illustration of how they can do it and a little motivation, the children began to express their creativity. Some took longer than the others but the eagerness wasthere. It took them longer than 12 minutes, but of course that was okay.

We had a total of 8 groups that came to our painting station and all of them except for one boy, did what was asked of them. First, I tried to motivate him but he stayed quiet. Feeling the need, K. Som came to the rescue, but even with her gentle persuasion, the boy just stayed as an observer. He wouldnt even be persuaded to write his name. But thats okay with us, no problem. I just hope he enjoyed going to all the other stations and the rest of the activities in the afternoon.
